To the south of Radnorshire lies the Wye Valley, in or near which can be found a number of reserves – several areas of woodland, wildfowl winter feeding grounds and a ‘roadside’ reserve made up of varied stretches of verge and adjacent ground. Nearby can be found the Begwns, open access hill grazing owned by the National Trust, which provides excellent views to south and north.\nIn the mid-section of the county, between Llandrindod Wells and Kington (just into Herefordshire), reserves include a waterfall gorge with nearby Victorian features, upland moor and wetland, further woodland and a common frequented by ground-nesting birds. Continuing to the northern edge of the county leads to Presteigne, the setting for one of the two ‘urban’ walks combining meadows, riverside and woodlands. Moving to the north and west leads to Beacon Hill Crown Estate (managed by Radnorshire Wildlife Trust), a substantial area of open moorland, crossed by Glyndwr’s Way. The area around Rhayader includes a working organic farm with a wide variety of habitats, further woodland, some within the Elan Valley itself and areas of open hill land.
