For it is on these occasions, or shortly after periods of heavy rain, that these excursions really excel. Crashing streams, foaming waterfalls and cascades make for some exciting experiences and wonderful sights to remember. If days are curtailed due to rainfall there is no better way of spending an hour or two than exploring these spectacles. \nAlthough the 250 foot high Pistyll y Rhaeadr is regarded as the highest waterfall in Wales there are three falls which exceed that height in this area – Maesglase, Pistyll y Llyn and Rhaeadr y Cwm. All these have a mighty 600 foot drop. Pistyll y Rhaeadr is easily approached by car and is then a very short walk to view this majestic fall. Although there are paths up the side the best view is from the base. Note the arch low down which the water has created and now forces its way through. The fall is located near to the village of Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant, between Oswestry and Lake Vyrnwy.\nOther magnificent waterfalls, not described here although it is possible to drive to them, are at Devil’s Bridge, 12 miles east of Aberystwyth on the A4120. A £2.50 charge is levied to access the trail to view these 300 foot falls in a narrow ravine that has been carved out by the fast flowing river – the Afon Mynach. This river joins the Afon Rheidol some 400 feet lower down. Well worth the journey.\nMany of the waterfalls described in this book also lie in some of the most beautiful woodlands in Wales. Some of the walks follow rough and slippery ground – especially when approaching the falls – so do take care. All the waterfalls described can be viewed from safe ground.
