About Us

The Books Council of Wales’ mission is to promote reading for pleasure in whatever format. Ffolio was set up to meet demands by readers for a Welsh language platform, as well as supporting the publishing industry in Wales. Ffolio also provides an income for the booksellers, who are a crucial part in of the book industry.

As a national charity, the Books Council were established in Aberystwyth in 1961 and employ approximately 40 staff.

We provide specialist services to publishers in the fields of editing, design, marketing and distribution. This is in order to ensure high standards in the production and publication of Welsh-language or English-language material relating to Wales.

We administer grants to support literary and magazine publishing in both languages, as well as an online news service.

We are here to promote of literacy and reading for pleasure. We ensure a steady stream of publications, but also organise special activities to celebrate reading.

Commercial books sales and Welsh Government fund our work.
