An adventure novel set in the Welsh marches about a young boy drawn to an ancient burial mound where he relives parts of the legend of Culhwch and Olwen as he comes face to face with modern-day evil forces; for 9-12 year-old readers. First published in 2002.
Are the strange spiral patterns on the gold medallion linked to King Arthur? A fantasy novel for children aged 9-12, set in Wales.
~Publisher: Y Lolfa
This novel is an adventure story that blends fantasy and reality a modern day Enid Blyton, with a dash of Alan Garner.
Because Huw is in a vulnerable state after his mothers death, he is highly sensitive to the supernatural occurrences at the local medieval burial ground Twmp Trelech and he, his cousin Arthur and their friend Samantha are drawn into part of Culhwch and Olwens story from the Mabinogion. At the same time, they investigate a present-day mystery that is centred on the Twmp. The supernatural and present day mysteries draw together into a satisfying conclusion, and Huws mothers death is avenged.
This would have been a meatier novel if Huws coming to terms with his mothers death had been further developed and the Arthurian link expanded. As it is, readers will be attracted by the dramatic cover, and the pacey action and short chapters will keep them reading.
