Patagonia: one man's fascinating vision of the present, which is ever mindful of the past. Weaving harsh yet beautiful landscapes with faces that are hard to forget around a central presence of Welsh communities and culture on a far continent, this is a living memoir of life in Patagonia at the beginning of the twenty-first century. Trilingual text (Welsh, English, Spanish).
English and Spanish reviews follow Mae yna ryw dynfa ryfeddol i’r Wladfa. Does ond angen treulio amser byr yn y rhan ddiarffordd hon o dalaith Chubut yng nghanolbarth yr Ariannin er mwyn profi hyn. Yn ddi-os, mae yna ramant anesboniadwy am yr anialwch llwm lle glaniodd rhyw 150 o Gymry tlawd ym 1865. Ac wrth inni nesáu at ddathlu 150 o flynyddoedd ers glanio’r fintai gyntaf yn 2015, mae ymddangosiad y gyfrol swmpus hon o luniau gan Ed Gold yn amserol dros ben. Dyma gofnod ffotograffig pwysig iawn o ffordd o fyw sy’n prysur ddiflannu o’r tir. Un o raglenni cyfres Cefn Gwlad Dai Jones am y Wladfa a ysbrydolodd y ffotograffydd i deithio rhyw wyth mil o filltiroedd ar gyfer y fenter yma, ac yn ystod y ddau gyfnod estynedig o ryw ddwy flynedd a hanner a dreuliodd Ed Gold yn y Wladfa, mae’n cyfaddef iddo dynnu rhyw 16,000 o luniau. Detholiad o’r rhain, yn ddu a gwyn ac mewn lliw, a gawn ni yn y gyfrol hon, ac mae’r cyflwyniad yn ogystal â’r holl nodiadau cefndir yn dairieithog – Cymraeg, Sbaeneg a Saesneg. Dylai’r ffaith yma’n unig sicrhau apêl eang i’r gyfrol gan gymunedau y ddwy ochr i Fôr Iwerydd. Mae rhediad thematig pendant i’r dewis lluniau. Y gwastadeddau dramatig sy’n cael y sylw cychwynnol, wedyn daw’r wynebau i'n sylw. Mae’r gyfrol yn diweddu trwy bortreadu’r trigolion o fewn eu hamgylchfyd. Difyr sylwi nad ydy Ed Gold wedi atal rhediad y lluniau trwy gynnwys gormod o wybodaeth ysgrifenedig ar bob tudalen. Ond i’r rhai sy’n awyddus i wybod, mae nodiadau manwl ar gefndir bob llun ar y tudalennau olaf. Mae hon yn llawer mwy na chyfrol arferol ‘bwrdd-coffi’ sy’n adrodd hanes taith ffotograffydd mewn gwlad dramor. Ceir yma gysylltiad emosiynol iawn rhyngon ni’r Cymry â chynnwys y lluniau. Mae yma hefyd ryw agosatrwydd anesboniadwy yn ein denu tuag y ‘Byd Arall’ rhyfeddol. Dyma anrheg Nadolig berffaith, dybiwn i, i’r rhai sy’n awyddus i ail-fyw profiad Patagonia ac i’r rhai sy’n dal i freuddwydio am fynd yno. **************** The Welsh colony in Patagonia (known in Welsh as the Wladfa) holds a spellbinding attraction, and one only needs to spend a short time in this remote part of Chubut to appreciate this. Undoubtedly there is an unexplicable magic about the wilderness in which some 150 poverty stricken Welsh immigrants attempted to eke out an existence in 1865. And as we approach the 150th celebration of this event, the publication of Ed Gold’s sumptuous book of photographs is relevant and timely. This is a photographic memoir of a way of life which is rapidly disappearing. The pages of this lavish volume are filled with images of dramatic landscapes, of memorable faces, of antiquated vehicles and farm equipment belonging to a long-forgotten age, and of buildings which appear to have distinct Welsh characteristics but are disctinctively foreign at the same time. After viewing one programme in the Cefn Gwlad series, Gold was inspired to travel over 8,000 miles solely for this project, and took around 16,000 photographs during his visit to the Wladfa. We’re presented with a selection of these, both in colour and black and white, and the volume’s preface, as well as all the notes, are trilingual – Welsh, Spanish and English. This fact alone should broaden the volume’s appeal to readers on both sides of the Atlantic. There is a definitive running theme to the book’s contents. The dramatic landscape is shown in the first section, followed by the distinct faces, and the volume ends with portraits of the inhabitants in their own surroundings. It’s interesting that Ed Gold hasn’t broken the sequence by including too much written information on each page, but for those eager to discover more, there are copious notes on each photograph on the final pages of the book. This is much more than a coffee-table book about one photographer’s journey to foreign climes. There is a distinct emotional bond between the Welsh people and the subjects of the photographs, as well as an inexplicable pull which attracts us all to this ‘other world’. Gomer has provided us with an ideal Christmas present for those who wish to re-live their own experiences of Patagonia, as well those who dream of their first visit.
